New Web Site and Blog Traffic Generation

New Web Sites and Blogs have specific challenges that must be overcome to begin generating traffic.

The two primary issues most difficult to overcome are:

  • Time and trust issues which are part of Search Algothrim
  • The number of links which point to the new web site or blog.

The following Time/Trust Issues all play a part in the Time/Trust aspect of the Search Engine Algothrim.

  • The age of the Domain Name
  • The length of Domain Name registration contract
  • How long the web site has been online
  • Inbound links pointing to the site (Backlinks)

As you can see from the issues mentioned, most are beyond your ability to control apart from developing Backlinks and the duration of the Domain Name registration.

It is recommended you register your Domain Name for at least a two year period. The trust issue here is related to Hackers and Spammers purchasing throwaway Domain Name because they often get their sites taken down and de-listed.

Backlinks

The number of links leading to a new Web Site or Blog are un-surprisingly nil. The fact of the matter is, links are important in more ways than just achieving reasonable placement in Search Engine Results Pages. Links have the ability to drive traffic to your web site from other web sites.

However, with regards to Search Engine traffic, the number and quality of inbound links is a consideration of Search Engine Algothrim., the more Backlinks your web site or Blog has the better it will do in the Search Engine results.

To check this out, search for some of your business’s primary keywords as determined by your keyword research, make a note of how many links are pointing to the sites who are achieving top placement in the SERPs for your selected keywords. It may not always be the case but in general the top performing web sites will have a significant number of backlinks.

Getting Traffic Moving

I have often said that “The real work begins when the web site or Blog goes live” and over the years this statement has been proven true, time and time again. But don’t despair there are numerous techniques available to you to assist you in your quest for web site or Blog traffic.

Getting Search Engine Attention

In the past it was an arduous task to get indexed with Search Engines and it often took a significant period to time to achieve requiring you to submit your site to the Search Engines which is still possible but not entirely necessary. In some cases such as MSN (Bing) it still takes a considerable amount of time to get your site indexed. However, getting indexed in Google and Yahoo which combined share approximately 75% of the Search market is much quicker.

Here are some of the techniques to assist you to get your Web Site / Blog indexed with the Search Engines.

Blog Commenting

Commenting on other Blogs offers your new Web Site or Blog a couple of benefits:

  1. Popular high traffic Blogs are checked regularly by Search Engines. Search Engines crawl Internet links including Blogs.By including the URL of your Web Site or Blog in your comments, your web site / blog gets noticed by Search Engines much quicker than submitting to the Search Engines using their provided forms
  2. Leaving high value relevant comments on Blogs motivates other Blog visitors to visit your web site due to your insightful and helpful comments.

Ping Your Blog

Pinging your blog to Search Engines and other Blog related web site such as Technorati using a service such as Ping-o-matic will inform the Search Engine that your Blog has been updated. I have seen Google Alerts pick up blog updates using a Pinging service within minutes of posting.

A great reason to have a Blog associated with your business’s Web Site.

Social Media

Social Media is a broad topic which includes numerous techniques to generate Web Site and Blog traffic.

Blogging: Blogging is one of the primary Social Media tools and are beneficial tool to generate web site traffic, and therefore should be included in any new web site development program.

Social Networking Web Sites: Social Networking sites offer endless opportunities to interact with your target audience.By participating in groups and forums you will increase the visibility of not only you personally but also your Web Site and Blog.

Providing you have identified the groups and forums populated by your target audience, and you provide helpful, relevant and useful content to your audience, Social networking web sites offer plenty of potential to deliver traffic to your web site or Blog.

Pay Per Click Campaigns

Pay Per Click should never be used as the primary driver of web site traffic. However, for short term promotions and during the lead time prior to your Organic Search Engine Optimization becoming effective Pay Per Click is an excellent method to get traffic moving to your Web Site or Blog.

The long term

Looking into the future is now possible that some of the immediate techniques to generate Web Site and Blog traffic have been initiated.

Links and more links will be your objective. If you have identified your target audience and provided them with the content they require you will begin to obtain links to your Web Site or Blog purely due to the high quality of your content.

There is no better link building technique than the development of high quality content.

    Hi Pete

A succinct summary and excellent advice for entrepreneurs and marketers just starting out. In many early stage tech companies Web sites we also see a lot of product-speak gobbledegook content, which does not help.

Great content drives traffic and we need to focus our content on how using our products or sevices creates value for our audience, not the products/services themselves
