Keyword Research and PPC

Pay Per Click Keyword Research

Keywords are embedded into your business's online activities, and Pay Per Click is no different. Good solid keyword research is a prerequisite to an effective Pay Per Click campaign, after all you will be paying for these words on a Per Click basis Keywords are part of every aspect of your Pay Per Click Program and necessary to meet your customers expectation throughout the conversion funnel, after all these are the words used to encourage Internet users to Click on your ad. Keywords are what Internet users are looking for. Providing you have identified the keywords used by your target audience the proper use of your keywords throughout your campaign is essential to attract and convert visitors into a potential clients and customers.

The Keyword Research Tools

Without doubt keyword tools are necessary to evaluate your potential keywords, the words and combination of words available is potentially endless and therefore obviously a task for Keyword Research Software. Software options are prolific, there are free tools, paid subscription services, Search Optimization Software the possibilities are almost as endless as potential keyword combinations. A couple of services stand out from the rest. As a free tool I am a great fan of the Google Keyword Research Tool, and Paid Services such as WordTracker, Keyword Discovery, Spy4U and KeywordSpy. Using more than one resource to research keywords is always recommended. I do prefer using a specialized keyword tool, in general I do not find the results in most SEO Software to be very imaginative or informative. If you do chose a Search Optimization product WebCEO does has a reasonable keyword research tool which integrates throughout the software. One product I do like the looks of is Wordstream which offers a comprehensive keyword research and management software package.

Doing the PPC Keyword Research

When completing keyword research I rarely overlook the Free Adword Tool from Google. If you search a term in Adwords you will get a list of results that are relevant to topic, but may be to expensive for your PPC budget. Depending on the niche targeted Google Adwords can be coaxed to come up with some interesting and affordable results. I do consider multiple ad and landing pages a prerequisite to high ROI Pay Per Click Campaigns. High volume terms are highly sought after and therefore expensive. A good strategy to follow is to build the traffic volumes from using numerous very targeted 3 or 4 word phrases which convert well due to targeting, and are often less expensive due to the lower traffic volumes and therefore less competitive. I like to drill down into the Google Adword results which can be done following a couple simple steps
  1. Enter 3 or 4 targeted keywords and enter Search
  2. From the results scroll down and download to CSV
  3. Open downloaded results and use sort function to sort keywords alphabetically.
  4. Review sorted results looking for sub grouping of your original search
  5. Select a sub-grouping and Enter into Google Adwords
  6. Repeat process as necessary
Search engine friendly content For full size video of Pay Per Click Keyword Research is available here As you work your way through the above process you discover numerous groups of highly targeted keywords and often discover keywords with reasonable search volumes and low estimated cost per click that others have missed due to lack of research. The above process provides an in depth insight into which keywords are used to find your products and services, and how often. Add this information to that obtained from additional keyword research tools and you have an extensive list of targeted and affordable options from which to develop your various Pay Per Click Campaigns.
